You may at first think it’s odd that your air conditioner has an appreciation day all its own, but we can’t think of a better system in your home worthy of praise. In fact, when was the last time you stopped to think about how wonderfully comfortable your AC keeps things in your home and business?
Your air conditioning is one of those things that works hard in the background to keep you cool and dry, but when it stops working in the middle of August during a heatwave you notice its absence immediately.
In celebration of this special day named for your AC, we’ll visit a few reasons why it’s important to treat your AC unit well and perform regular checks and maintenance.
Air Conditioning Maintenance & You
Air conditioning maintenance is one of the best things you can do for your continued comfort within your home and to prevent unneeded and costly repairs.
You should have your AC system serviced and inspected at least once per year in order to ensure it’s performing properly. Preferably, you’ll want to get this inspection taken care of in Spring before the hot summer months begin.
This is because AC’s work harder to keep things cool in the heat, and when they’re not properly maintained they have a larger possibility of breaking down. Ensuring your unit is properly maintained is much cheaper than dealing with a costly broken one later down the road.
Sometimes You Need an AC Replacement
While proper maintenance of your AC unit can prevent many situations in which you would need to replace it, there are times that will require replacement of the entire unit which is unavoidable. Here are some examples of those times in which AC replacement is inevitable:
- When your AC is more than 10 years old, it’s better to go ahead and replace it. In general, AC units will last about 15 years before breaking down, but when they hit the 10-year mark it can cost more to run them than just replacing the unit.
- When you receive a higher estimate for repairs, sometimes it is more cost-efficient to just replace the entire unit.
- If your AC is breaking down frequently, it makes sense to replace it as opposed to continuously paying for parts and labor.
- If your AC has a lower SEER rating than 13, it can cost you more in utility costs to run it than it would to just replace the entire unit.
Duct Cleaning is Also Important
While AC unit maintenance is extremely important on its own, duct cleaning is also imperative to keeping your home’s entire HVAC system running smoothly, while maintaining good air quality.
When you make sure your air ducts are kept clean and clear of debris it helps improve the air quality within your home by eliminating dust from being moved through your home in the ductwork.
This also reduces bacteria and mildew growth, and helps to eliminate bad odors from being filtered through your home. The efficiency of your HVAC system will also improve due to the air being able to move freely without debris hindering its movement.
When it's all said and done, it really makes sense that your air conditioning has its own appreciation day. After all, where would we be without cool and clean air flowing through our homes and businesses to keep us comfortable and improve the air we breathe? This AC Day, thank an HVAC technician out there for what they do and schedule your next service appointment in celebration of this meaningful day.
